4-H helps young people overcome obstacles and reach their potential. 4-H clubs, programs and activities provide closeness and trust with responsible adults, give meaning and purpose in young lives and instill confidence to face life’s challenges.
4-H began in Jacksboro in 1908. What began as a single club for 25 boys now serves 578,000 boys and girls from all across Texas. Today’s 4-Hers are involved in animal projects, food shows, fashion shows and county fairs. They are also learning about public speaking, shooting sports, photography, financial planning, citizenship and veterinary medicine.
4-H is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 19 regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, handicap or national origin. In Wise County, there are 10 organized clubs: Alvord, Boyd, Bridgeport, Chico, Decatur, Paradise, Slidell, Horse, Rabbit and Clothing and Textiles. There are also four project groups: Shooting Sports, Horse, Dog and Photography. As you can see, there is something for everyone in 4-H.
For those too young for 4-H, there is the 4-H Clover Kids program. This is an informal education program for children ages 5 through 8. Clover Kids focuses on hands-on learning by making things, working and playing together. It is a family-centered program, and all parents are encouraged to become involved in their child’s 4-H Clover Kids Club.

EXTENSION CLUBS
The Wise County AgriLife Extension office has one Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA) club, which is located in the community of Greenwood.
The club was formed to serve as an outreach into the community and county.
“The members of the Greenwood Extension Education (EE) club work with the Extension office to strengthen and enrich families through education programs, leadership development and community service,” said Tanya Davis, family and consumer sciences Extension agent.
The Greenwood EE club meets at 11 a.m. the fourth Friday at Greenwood Fire Hall.
For information on forming a club or joining the Greenwood club, call Davis at (940) 627-3341 or email ttdavis@ag.tamu.edu.
