Once a detour for crews on the cattle trail, Audubon grew to be an important town in the 19th century, before its decline. Named for naturalist John J. Audubon, at its height, the community had a post office, a school, two cotton gins, a telephone office and several stores, churches, lawyers, physicians and blacksmiths.
