The commission is responsible for initiating and conducting programs suggested by county commissioners and the Texas Historical Commission.
It has been responsible for the preservation and operation of Wise County Heritage Museum as well as reviewing all applications for state historical markers before they go to the THC and serve as advisers to the commissioners court on matters of historic preservation.
Wise County commissioners are responsible for appointing members to the commission in January of odd-numbered years.
